History & Character of the NordseeHotel Borkum
The NordseeHotel Borkum looks back on a history spanning more than 130 years. Since its beginnings in the late 19th century, the hotel has been synonymous with hospitality, consistency, and the island’s unique character. Here, time-honored tradition and modern comfort come together to create a place with a genuine soul.
Roots That Sustain
The origins of the NordseeHotel Borkum can be traced back to the purchase of the property by Dr. Gerd Schmidt in 1890. Shortly thereafter, construction of the hotel began on what was then known as Prinz-Heinrich-Straße. On July 25, 1891, the hotel welcomed its first guests—a milestone that marked the beginning of a long tradition of hospitality.
As early as its first year, the hotel had 27 rooms available. The first guestbook attests to brisk business and early guests who appreciated the hotel’s unique location and tranquility. For generations, the NordseeHotel Borkum has remained family-owned and has been continuously developed—with respect for the past and an eye toward the future.
